In a Google Ads responsive search ad, a headline can be 30 characters, a description 90 and each path field 15. Type a headline in the box and the Google Ads headline row tells you how many more characters you can add. Paste a description or a path the same way and keep it at 90 or 15.
Character limits for a responsive search ad
| Field | Limit | How many you enter |
|---|---|---|
| Headline | 30 characters | 3 to 15 |
| Description | 90 characters | 2 to 4 |
| Path | 15 characters each |

Checking each line
- 1Paste one headline and read the Google Ads headline row. If it shows a number below zero, cut that many characters.
- 2Clear the box and paste one description. Keep the Characters row at 90 or under.
- 3Do the same for each path, keeping it at 15 or under.
Headlines and descriptions can show in any order, so each one has to read well on its own. Count them one at a time rather than pasting the whole ad in.
What this counter does not do
Google counts each Korean, Japanese or Chinese character as 2. This counter counts every character as 1, so for an ad in those languages, double the count for those characters yourself.
It doesn't preview the ad or check Google's ad policies.
This character counter is free with no signup. SearchBlueprint, who make it, sell SEO planning for websites: which searches each page should answer.
