This character counter counts every character as you type or paste, with and without spaces, plus words and lines. Beside the count it shows how much room is left for a title tag (60), a meta description (160) and an X post (280), so you know it fits before Google or X cuts it short. It runs in your browser and needs no signup.
How to use the character counter
- 1Type or paste your text into the box. The counts update on every keystroke.
- 2Read Characters for the full count and Without spaces if a form counts only letters, digits and punctuation.
- 3Check Room left. Green means it fits, red shows how many characters to cut.
- 4Trim the text in the box until the row you care about turns green, then copy it back to where it belongs.
When to use it
- You are writing a title tag and want it whole in Google, not cut off with dots.
- A meta description keeps getting truncated and you want to see by how much.
- You are drafting a post for X and the link and the emoji are eating the limit.
- A form, an app store listing or a bio field has a hard limit and rejects your text.
Worked examples
A title tag that runs long
We pasted a word counter title written for search results.
- Text
- Free Word Counter - Count Words and Characters Online, No Signup Needed
- Characters
- 71
- Without spaces
- 60
- Words
- 11
- Title tag
- 11 over
Eleven characters over means Google is likely to cut the end, and the end is where this title says no signup. Drop Online and move No signup forward, and it fits.
A post with a link
We pasted a post for X that ends with a link to a blog post.
- Text
- New on the blog: how we cut our title tags to fit https://searchblueprint.io/blog/title-tags
- Characters
- 92
- X post
- 207 left
The box counts 92 characters, but X counts any link as 23, so the post uses 73 of its 280. A long link costs no more on X than a short one; an emoji would add 2.
The limits the counter checks
| Row | Limit | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Title tag | 60 characters | A display guide. Google sets no limit and cuts titles to fit the screen. |
| Meta description | 160 characters | A display guide. Google sets no limit and cuts snippets to fit the screen. |
| X post | 280 characters | X's own limit, counted X's way: links 23, emoji 2. |
Google's own documentation says there is no limit on how long a title element or a meta description can be; both are shortened in results as needed, usually to fit the width of the device. 60 and 160 are the lengths that usually show in full, and the same numbers our SERP preview uses.
