An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters. Instagram doesn't cap the number of words. Paste your caption above and compare the character count with 2,200. You also get the word count, sentences and reading time, plus the ten words you use most and the two-word phrases you repeat.
Instagram's limits for captions and alt text
| Field | Limit |
|---|---|
| Post caption | 2,200 characters |
| Image alt text | 1,000 characters |
These limits come from Meta's Instagram Platform documentation for publishing posts, read in October 2026.
Hashtags and @ tags have their own limits on top of the character cap. This counter doesn't count hashtags or @ tags separately, and it doesn't show how many of the 2,200 characters you have left. Do that sum yourself from the character count.
Spot repeated words before you post
A long caption can lean on the same word over and over. The list of your ten most-used words and the two-word phrases you repeat shows where that happens. Swap or cut a few and check that the character count still fits.
You can paste a draft you haven't posted yet. It stays in your browser and is never sent to a server.
