This broken link checker tests every link on a web page and tells you which ones are dead. Enter a page URL and it checks up to 100 links, then sorts them: broken first, then links that need a check by hand, then redirects, then the ones that work. Each row shows the status code, the anchor text and whether the link is internal or external. It is free and needs no signup.
How to use the broken link checker
- 1Type the address of the page you want to check, such as your homepage or a long blog post.
- 2Press Check, or hit Enter. A page with many links takes up to a minute.
- 3Read the four counts: Broken, Redirects, Check by hand and OK.
- 4Work down the list from the top. Each row gives the verdict, the status code, the link, where it points and its anchor text.
- 5Open anything marked Blocked bot or No answer in your browser. Those sites refused or ignored an automated check, which does not mean they are down.
When to use it
- You redesigned your site or renamed pages and want to know which links now go nowhere.
- An old blog post links out to other sites and you suspect some of them have closed.
- A visitor told you a button or menu link is broken and you want to find the rest.
- You are about to send a page to a client or run ads to it and want it clean first.
Worked example
A homepage with no broken links
We checked our own homepage.
- URL to check
- https://searchblueprint.io
- Broken
- 0
- Redirects
- 2
- Check by hand
- 1
- OK
- 36
- Result
- 39 unique links found on the page, 39 checked. 9 mailto, tel, javascript or in-page links were skipped.
- Blocked bot
- 401, https://searchblueprint.io/mcp, Internal, anchor "MCP Server"
- Redirect
- 200, https://searchblueprint.io/help, Internal, anchor "SEO Teams", linked 2 times. Redirects once to https://docs.searchblueprint.io/
Nothing is broken. The one link to check by hand answered 401, which means the server asks for a login. For a link labelled MCP Server that is expected, so there is nothing to fix. The two redirects both go once to our docs site. They work, but pointing those links straight at the docs address saves each visitor a hop.
What each verdict means
| Verdict | What happened |
|---|---|
| Broken | The link answered 404, 410 or another error of 400 or above, or its domain no longer exists |
| No answer | The link timed out or the connection failed. Try it in a browser. |
| Blocked bot | The site answered 401, 402, 403, 429, 503 or 999, which usually means it refuses automated checks |
| Redirect | The link works but sends you on to another address first |
| Not checked | The link ran past the time limit, or points to a private address the tool will not open |
| OK | The link answered normally |
