Since version 5.5, WordPress builds an XML sitemap by itself at yoursite.com/wp-sitemap.xml, so open that address first: most WordPress sites already have one. If yours is missing, enter your homepage above and the generator crawls up to 100 pages and writes a sitemap.xml of the ones Google can index.
The sitemap WordPress builds
- The sitemap index is at /wp-sitemap.xml on WordPress 5.5 and later. Each sitemap in it holds up to 2,000 URLs by default, and the index can hold 50,000 sitemaps.
- When a site is set to discourage search engines from indexing it, under Settings > Reading, WordPress turns its sitemaps off.
When to generate one here
Use the generator when the built-in sitemap is switched off, or when you want a file you can read before you submit it. It lists every page it left out and the reason, such as a noindex tag.
It stops at 100 pages, so a larger site is better served by the sitemap WordPress builds.
This XML sitemap generator is free with no signup. SearchBlueprint, who make it, sell SEO planning for websites: which searches each page should answer.
