SEO for bakeries
A specialty bakery ran through our August 2026 benchmark, and its SERPs belonged to food directories before any rival bakery appeared.
Directories own the food SERPs.
Search for a cake in most cities and the first screen belongs to food platforms, delivery apps and listing sites, with actual bakery websites underneath or absent. A bakery site still wins searches, but they are the specific ones: a product with a niche, an occasion with a place, a question the platforms do not answer.
The bakery in our August 2026 benchmark made that concrete: competitor discovery returned five food directories and delivery platforms before any rival bakery. Ranking here means two things at once, competing for the positions the directories have not locked, and being present on the platforms for the positions they have.
The same benchmark run hit the other bakery-shaped problem: the site's firewall blocked our crawler outright, and the honest result in that case is a not-assessed audit naming the block, not an invented grade. Bakery sites on commerce platforms with aggressive bot protection should expect this, and allowlisting the crawler is the first fix.
Local rankings, block by block
Cake buyers search near where they will collect or deliver. The local monitor measures your ranking from a grid of points around your shop, so your real delivery-radius visibility is a map rather than one search from your own postcode.
Help centre: Local and monitorStructured data for products and the shop
The schema audit reads what your pages declare, then writes the JSON-LD to fix the gaps so products, prices and the business itself are machine-readable. It only plans markup for pages it could retrieve, never for pages it was blocked from.
A page per product niche and occasion
The keyword map matches your searches to pages: the signature product, the occasions, the questions. Specialty bakeries usually rank for their niche product long before they rank for the generic term, and the map orders the work that way.
A named fix when the crawler is blocked
Commerce platforms ship firewalls that refuse bots, ours included. When that happens the audit says so and the crawler-blocked guide walks through allowlisting, instead of the report quietly grading the two pages that got through.

Questions people in this niche ask
The ones that decide whether this fits, answered with the verdict first.
- The delivery platforms outrank us for everything. Is our website pointless?
- No, but its targets are specific. In our August 2026 benchmark the bakery's SERPs listed five directories before any bakery, so the plan aims your site at niche-product, occasion and question searches while your platform listings cover the locked terms.
- Should we be on the food platforms and directories too?
- Yes. Where a directory holds the position, presence on it is how you appear there, and that is distribution, not SEO failure. Your own site wins the searches the platforms serve badly.
- Our shop runs on a commerce platform. Anything to watch?
- The firewall. The bakery in our August 2026 benchmark blocked our crawler entirely, and any bot-protection layer may do the same. The audit reports the block honestly, and allowlisting takes minutes once you know it is the issue.
- What content should a bakery actually publish?
- Product pages before posts, and questions before either. Your signature products each deserve a page, and the questions people ask around them, storage, sizing, ordering lead times, are searches the platforms leave unanswered.
What we will not do
We will not pretend a website alone beats the delivery platforms; some food SERPs are directory-locked, and the plan says which.
