Audit failed, timed out, or came back empty

The five reasons an audit does not produce a report, and how to tell which one you hit.

Work through these in order

1. Can an anonymous visitor reach the site?

Open your site in a private browser window, signed out. If you see a login screen, a country block, a CAPTCHA, or a "checking your browser" page, our crawler sees the same thing and there is nothing for it to audit.

This is the single most common cause of an empty report.

2. Does the site render its content in JavaScript?

View source on a page - the real HTML source, not the inspector - and search for a sentence you can see on screen. If it is not in the source, the content is rendered in the browser after load. The crawler reads the HTML it is served, so a JavaScript-only site reads as thin or empty even though it looks fine to you.

Sites built as single-page applications are the usual case here.

3. Did it hit the time limit?

An audit has a hard ceiling of about 5 minutes. Large sites can hit it before the report is written, which shows up as a run that appears to finish with nothing saved.

If you have a large site: use Retry Audit. That is the designed recovery, not a workaround. Audits are not resumable, so a retry starts over.

4. Is the site blocking our crawler specifically?

Some hosts and WAFs block anything that is not a mainstream browser. We retry with browser headers when we get a 403 or a 503, which clears most of them. If your host is stricter, allowlist our crawler or ask your host to.

Check robots.txt too - a Disallow: / blocks us as designed.

5. Did the data provider return nothing?

Keyword and competitor data comes from a search data provider. A brand new domain, a very small niche, or an unusual market can genuinely have no data. That is a real answer, not a failure, and the report says so instead of inventing numbers.

Things that look like failures and are not

A category shows a dash instead of a score. Nothing measurable was found for it on the crawled pages. It is not a zero and does not count against you.

Off-page or Backlinks shows as not available. Correct and deliberate. Backlink data needs a paid subscription that is not enabled, so rather than invent a score we say it is not measured. See Reading your report.

The AI presence tiles show sample data. Some AI-visibility panels are marked as samples because the data source behind them is not enabled. They are labelled where that is the case.

Fewer pages than your site has. An audit crawls up to 200 pages and samples beyond that. The report states how many it read.

Still stuck

Open the Support chat and include the domain and roughly when you ran it. That becomes a card the team triages, and you get the reference number in the reply.
